What is a housing co-op?
A housing co-op is a unique form of home ownership. It is
a legal, not for profit business association formed for the
purpose of providing homes to its members on a continuing
basis. A co-op is different from other housing associations
in its ownership structure and its commitment to
co-operative principles.

Who owns a housing co-op?
The units in a co-op are not individually owned. They are
owned by the co-operative and cannot be bought or sold for
profit.
Who runs a housing co-op?
Each year co-op members elect from among themselves a
Board of Directors to run the co-op. The Board administers
the day-to-day management of the co-op. Additionally,
members serve on committees with various responsibilities
such as new member selection, maintenance, finance and
newsletter. Sometimes a co-op will hire staff, but the final
decisions and responsibilities rest with the co-op members.
How does a housing co-op get its operating dollars?
Housing charges are the monthly amount the co-op charges
for each unit to cover the co-op operating costs. Unlike
rents, co-op housing charges rise only with increases in
operating costs.
